Madrid reinforces the collection of paper, cardboard and containers from containers, which will have sensors

Under the new plan, the capital’s paper-cardboard containers will be collected from a minimum of six times a week to four times a day, depending on the generation of this waste in the area. For its part, the packaging containers will be collected daily, going from 4 times to 7 times a week. The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has estimated that in the last six years the quantities of cardboard collected have exceeded 33,000 tons in 2016 to more than 75,000 in 2021. For this reason, a minimum collection frequency has been established for containers on public roads. Regarding the organic fraction, it will be maintained daily and that of other waste (batteries, glass, waste, textiles) will be adapted to the generation demand. In the case of the collection of textile waste, the number of containers in the city will be increased to 1,600, which means doubling the current number of containers. ‘Smart’ containers It is expected that as of January 1, 2023, the containers in public road of fractions such as cardboard, glass and containers have sensors installed to detect if they are full and thus optimize the management of the service by requiring a smaller number of trucks circulating in the city to collect this waste. In this way, the removal will be guaranteed of waste when the containers reach 80% of their maximum capacity. The sensors will also make it possible to detect anomalies, fires or unauthorized movements. With this technology, real-time control will be carried out by identifying the cleaning, sanitation and maintenance actions carried out in the containers. The containerization service fleet will include GPS equipment for proper management of the provision. In addition, container washing will be intensified, increasing to once a month for organic waste containers and other waste, eight times a year for of containers and once every two months for the other fractions. The sanitation of the container points will be carried out with a frequency of once every fifteen days, with lifting of the containers and cleaning of the residues that have been trapped under them. Collection of cardboard ‘door to door’ and sustainable vehiclesThe new service also contemplates an expansion of the collection of commercial cardboard ‘door to door’ in areas with a high density of shops to prevent these establishments from throwing it in the containers, something that will prohibit the new Cleaning ordinance. The special characteristics of some markets and food galleries make it necessary to complement the service cio with a specific collection in the afternoon shift from Monday to Saturday, except holidays, and the City Council will serve centers of these characteristics that require it. With this service, at least the packaging and bio-waste fractions will be collected. On-demand and home collection of deceased pets. The specifications include new services that until now were included in other contracts, such as the management up to the final treatment of the collected paper and cardboard, the collection and treatment of textile waste, such as the used clothing, as well as pneumatic collection in the neighborhoods of San Francisco Javier and Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, in Puente de Vallecas. The machinery and vehicles used by the concessionaires to provide the service must be powered by compressed natural gas engines or by ‘zero emission’ engines and no collection or waste transport trucks that are propelled by r diesel, biodiesel or ethanol engines.
