Bořivoj Navrátil was born on September 26, 1933 in Kroměříž. He began to devote himself to the theater in 1951 in the so-called The youth club of the Horácké theater. Already at the age of 17, he began to perform as a guest in the performances of a professional ensemble. When he finished his studies at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts (JAMU), he got his first engagement in České Těšín, then played in Opava and Ostrava. The role of Romeo opened his way to Prague in 1961 – he went to the National Theatre. Father remarried five months after her death, but shot himself a month after the party. He simply could not cope with his mother’s death,” the actor once revealed. His father turned the gun on himself while the young son played in the next room. Subsequently, he ended up in the care of his aunt. However, her husband ended up in prison a few years later. In the late 1980s, Navrátil was threatened with death while filming the Slovak-Nepalese film Sagarmatha. He played a climber who reached the top of Mount Everest. “However, at an altitude of 5,400 meters, I was affected by altitude sickness, which consists in the fact that the blood thickens and cannot go through its paths. Swelling occurs and ends in death. The only way to survive was to get to the camp below, but it was not possible due to the difficult terrain. If it weren’t for our expedition doctor, I would have died,” revealed the actor, who ended up with bilateral pneumonia.
