Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, children have become unwelcome victims of war. Data from the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office indicates that in the first six months of the invasion, 430 minors had died in different Russian attacks, while another 823 had been injured. Many died while trying to flee with their families. Now, after eight months of war, an NGO in the city of Lviv has developed bulletproof cases and vests, designed for children. They have the capacity to protect them against bullets, shrapnel and debris produced by explosions. They have a striking red color, which would make it easier to identify. The organization or government Group in Defense of Lviv, which has led the project, affirms that nothing like this had ever been done before, because that need had not arisen. The head of the NGO, Maksym Plyokhov, points out that the main objective of the new protective clothing is to improve safety in the event of evacuation of minors. “We have struck a balance between the weight of the equipment and its level of protection. The bulletproof vest weighs about two kilograms. It is based on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, which fully protects against pistol bullets and various projectile debris or shards of glass or concrete. The main purpose of these vests is to help protect minors while they take cover in war zones,” says Plyokhov. Mariana Chugunova, a displaced woman from the city of Kharkov, is reassured after receiving those clothes for your daughter. “If, god forbid, we have to be evacuated again, I’ll have the helmet and vest for the girl and I won’t have to worry anymore,” she told Reuters.
