Although the Frankfurt Motor Show has been canceled for a long time due to a pandemic and the lack of interest of exhibitors, Munich took advantage of the situation and is organizing a mobility exhibition on a relaxed date, which will also include car news. However, visitors can look forward mainly to domestic brands that come in full armor.

These include, of course, Mercedes-Benz. The Stuttgart carmaker has embarked on the electrification of the model portfolio with full commitment and presents electric cars as if on a treadmill. However, the purely electrical time has not yet come, so it is necessary to respond to the requirements of today’s motorists.

While the trend of SUVs and crossovers still dominates, fleet emissions are also at stake. At Mercedes-Benz, they therefore decided to bring customers an alternative in the form of an increased C-Class Estate. In this case, off-road capabilities are combined with lower fuel consumption and thus carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, the station wagon body will offer similar transport capacity as SUVs of the same segment.

Following the example of the E All-Terrain model, the C-Class All-Terrain also gets all-wheel drive as standard. In addition, its main advantage over the traditional station wagon will be an increased chassis by 40 millimeters. It is complemented by distinctive plastic protection, extended wheel arches and new bumpers.

For off-road driving, it was also necessary to adjust the chassis settings. At the front, the four-link suspension with larger steering joints will work. The suspension will be comfortable with a passive shock absorption system. In terms of electronics, two driving modes will be added, namely Offroad and Offroad +. While the first is designed for dusty and gravel roads, the second can also handle steep exits and descents thanks to the adjustment of engine behavior, transmission, steering, stabilization control function and redistribution of power and torque between the axles. There will also be an assistant for driving downhill.

The range of engines has not yet been announced, but it will probably copy petrol and diesel four-cylinder engines, including mild-hybrid technology designed for the standard C-Class. They will work with a nine-speed automatic transmission. We will find out the details during the exhibition premiere in Munich. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class All-Terrain is expected to go on sale later this year.
