Sara Hernández, the young woman from Almería who inherited shearing a million sheep

One day Sara got up and without realizing it, almost a million sheep slipped into her calm and serene life. She didn’t even have time to react. This 35-year-old young woman from Almería inherited the business that her uncle left her by surprise: shearing wool throughout the Iberian Peninsula. And so, without a second thought, she quit her job at a clothing store and took up sheep farming. It was two years ago. Sara’s uncle got sick and she took it upon herself to take care of him. Two weeks before she died, she asked him to stay with her company in the Granada town of Órgiva, El Esquilador Guerrero, a company that she had built from scratch and that was now an entire shearing empire. “I didn’t know anything about sheep at that time,” Sara explains as she got down to work. A week before taking over the company’s command, she studied all the types of sheep in Spain and Portugal. “I made chops on my cell phone and on papers that I put in my bag,” Sara Hernández recalls with a smile. In addition, he had hundreds of clients throughout the country whose names he had to memorize and whose names he wrote down in his hand before meeting with them so as not to make mistakes. She needs experienced people and that is why she always ends up hiring crews from Uruguay and Argentina. “Last year I brought 93 shearers from abroad,” says Sara, “it’s a nice job and you earn a lot in a short time.” She will soon have to make a new public offer and if she does not find shearers in Spain she will go abroad again. Shearing normally begins in March and ends shortly before summer. “So that the sheep are fresh”, explains Sara, who is now able to easily distinguish a Merino from a Castilian… and it is better because the price is different depending on the breed.
