The Chinese Communist Party congress is mostly held behind closed doors, but the incident involving the former Chinese president came shortly after journalists covering the closing ceremony were allowed to enter the room. AFP notes that the former Chinese president’s sudden departure from the ceremony remains unexplained, with Chinese censors quickly deleting any posts referring to the incident from Chinese social media. Delegates to the 20th Congress of the ruling Communist Party of China on Saturday unanimously adopted a resolution on changes to the party constitution, strengthening Xi Jinping’s position. Xi Jinping is now almost certain to be confirmed as the party’s general secretary for a third five-year term on Sunday, consolidating his position as China’s most powerful politician since Mao Zedong, according to AFP.
