Var: an arsonist arrested by witnesses while trying to set fire to the forest – franceinfo

Motorists, witnesses to the scene, stopped the man on the edge of a departmental road in the Var and extinguished the fire using bottles of water and car floor mats.

A 56-year-old man tried to set the forest on fire with a flaming log, Saturday evening August 21, at the edge of the departmental road 559 between Le Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer and Cavalaire-sur-Mer in the Var, indicates this Sunday France Blue Provence.

Witnessing the scene, motorists immediately stopped the man and extinguished the fire using water bottles and car floor mats. Only 7 m² of grass burned.

Placed in custody by the gendarmerie brigade of La Croix-Valmer, the arsonist will be presented Monday, August 23 for immediate appearance before the judicial court of Draguignan.

According to the investigation, which is still ongoing, this act does not appear to be related to the fire that killed two and which ravages the Massif des Maures, about twenty kilometers from the events.
