The leaders of the member states of the European Union agreed on Friday on the so-called roadmap, the aim of which is to introduce measures aimed at protecting European consumers from sharply rising energy prices in the course of the following weeks. The AFP agency informs about it, saying that they reached such an agreement on Friday, after approximately 11 hours of negotiations. However, the AP agency emphasizes that the 27 leaders of the Union’s member countries were unable to bridge the differences of opinion even among some of the largest states, even after lengthy negotiations, and they failed to agree on the introduction of a price ceiling for natural gas. However, they agreed to continue looking for a compromise regarding the measures based on the proposals presented by the European Commission in this regard at the beginning of the week. “There is a strong and unanimously shared determination to act together as Europeans to achieve three goals: lower prices, ensure security of (energy) supply and continue efforts to reduce demand,” said European Council President Charles Michel. AFP described the joint statement of the leaders from the summit as a “public expression of unity”, but at the same time pointed out that the Union still faces difficult negotiations in this direction. Next week, the energy ministers of the member countries are to meet in Luxembourg to further discuss the drawn up road map. The President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, said at a press conference that the agreement from the EU summit establishes “a solid plan for how to proceed further on the issue of energy prices”.
