Moscow has promised retaliation following the announcement of new US sanctions on a Russian ship and two companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Saturday (August 21).

The $ 11 billion (€ 9.42 billion) project, which will double the existing Nord Stream pipeline after the Baltic Sea Day and allow Russia to bypass Ukraine in gas supplies to Europe, is causing tension between Moscow and Washington.

The US imposed sanctions on the ship, its owner and construction company on Friday (August 20) evening. However, according to the project’s opponents, even these measures are not sufficient to stop the project.

The United States and Britain also imposed sanctions on Friday on people who they say are agents of Russian intelligence and are responsible for last year’s poisoning of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

“We consider such hostile actions by President Joe Biden’s government to be dictated by a lack of political will and a reluctance to build US-Russian relations on a partnership basis,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zacharovova.
