Usa, floods in Tennessee: at least 8 dead

At least eight people have died and more than 30 are missing in Humphreys County in the southern state of Tennessee after the severe floods that hit the area yesterday. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis, speaking to the US press, said yesterday was the worst flood he has seen in his 28-year career. Power outages and a lack of cell phone services exacerbated the problems, Davis added. The US National Weather Service (NWS) said rainfall broke records for water levels in the Piney River. “People are trapped in their homes and have no way out,” the NWS reported, stressing that “the water goes up to their necks” and calling the situation “catastrophic”. According to local media reports, the Tennessee National Guard has been deployed to assist residents in distress.
