The fire is now under control in the Var, where firefighters are starting to leave the scene. Caution remains however in order, because the return of the wind is expected Sunday, August 22. More than 7,000 hectares have been burnt. A team from the 13 Hours was able to fly over the area by helicopter, and observe the damage.

The maquis seems frozen in the ashes, entirely blackened by the violence of the flames. Seen from the sky, there is no doubt that the fire started from a motorway rest area. Further on, the Massif des Maures (Var) is sometimes totally charred, sometimes incredibly preserved. “There is no more fauna, no more flora. It’s really charred”, sorry Ameyric Leneveu, helicopter pilot who accompanies the 13 Hours team over the disaster area, in the heart of a protected natural park.

In the middle of the desolate landscapes, we can see some islets which were miraculously spared by the flames. The fire sometimes jumped several hundred meters into the massif, preserving some villas. Others were not so lucky. Like the dozens of homes in a hamlet further away, destroyed by fire. The fire is under control on Saturday August 21, but caution remains in order.
