The accused Dušan Dědeček, who caused a tragic weekend traffic accident in the center of Bratislava with five victims while drunk, spoke to the media for the first time. In an interview for Markíza and JOJ television, he talked about his feelings and the circumstances that preceded the tragedy. According to his own words, he started drinking on Sunday at a family gathering. “My granddaughter came with her son, we had a good time. I tasted rum, but I’m not fond of it, so I didn’t do it again,” said Dědeček. He claims he drank about two drinks. He is ready to take the blame. When asked if he continued to drink at work, he did not answer directly. “I only came to open an office I didn’t plan to be in. My two colleagues couldn’t, I came and I misjudged the situation,” he added. It is said that he realized what had happened already in the car. “I have never experienced such a split second. I knew what I did and I am ready to take the blame,” the accused claims. He repented and apologized to the parents of the victims. “Unfortunately, it’s still a dream for me that can’t be turned back, that can’t be turned off. It keeps going through my head and I’m terribly sorry for what I’ve done. I’m sorry for the ruined lives. I don’t know how to express my regret for to all of that, and even if the parents probably won’t accept it, I want to ask them for reconciliation, for regret and for an apology.” He faces up to life in prison “I destroyed everything good I’ve ever done with one swipe of my hand. I will never be what I was,” added Dědeček. The former general secretary of the Slovak Deaflympics Committee is facing charges of criminal endangerment. If found guilty, he faces a prison sentence of 20 to 25 years or life imprisonment. The grandfather is still being prosecuted at large. Yesterday evening, the court released him from detention.
