Almost weekly, strong storms will pass through Slovakia this summer, bringing with them strong winds, torrential downpours, but also intense lightning activity. Despite the weather forecasts, however, we never know whether the storm will not catch us just when we are on a hike, or somewhere in nature, for example to camp. The Emergency Medical Service Operations Center therefore advises people on how to behave in such unpredictable situations.

According to the spokesperson of line 155 Alena Krčová, it is important to monitor meteorological forecasts on a trip to the mountains and thus also plan tours with regard to the weather. In addition, tourists should not underestimate their abilities under any circumstances.

It is important not to be the highest point

“In the event of an approaching storm, we should not stay close to metal objects, such as metal crosses, chains or risers, which serve as a safety feature in normal weather. In a storm, lightning can attract, it is necessary to move away from them, “ Krčová pointed out lovers of tourism. In addition, according to her, it is safest not to stay outdoors, but on the contrary, to be indoors. However, if the situation does not allow it, we should not stay in a large open space.

“Everything that goes upwards, such as free-standing trees, poles, elevated places, any tall objects, are natural lightning conductors. Caves and rock overhangs, which also attract lightning, are not safe either. “ Krčová explained. As she added, we should not wear anything on our shoulders or on top of each other for our own safety. These are mainly fishing rods, tools or umbrellas.

It is also important that tourists are not as the tallest object on bare and wet rocks, but that they try to get out of this area by a slow whistling walk. Already this year, there has been a case where lightning struck an indirect couple – it hit the wet ground and the electric shock hit the couple, injuring both.

You need to be very careful in the forest!

“During the storm, however, we must not remain on the edge of the forest. It is safer in its middle or even in the lower forest stand, which is a bit higher from humans. It is ideal to hide in the forest, never under a free-standing tree, not to stand out, snuggle with joined legs, curl up with a bowed head and thus survive the storm, “ stated Krčová. She reminded that people should not run to safety, but move through a slow, squeaky meeting. Likewise, Slovaks must not forget not to bathe in open water areas during a storm and, if we are the tallest object, not to make a phone call.

Krčová warned people that if they see a person in their vicinity who shows injuries after a lightning strike, if they have witnessed this event, they must be called for help immediately. “Only in the case of effective and quick help does one have a hope of survival after being struck by lightning. One of the main elements of first aid for a person struck by lightning is to clear his airways. First aid must be used for this – the head must be tilted and the chest compressed.
