The undisputed king is the Toyota RAV4, the Tesla Model Y continues its sleepy ride up the rankings, and the T-Roc has also made its way into the top ten. The Toyota RAV4 is the absolute undisputed king of the ranking with a huge lead over other models. The popularity of the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment has been steadily increasing since the early 1990s. Just for interest – from less than 50 million in 2010, their number has increased to approximately 320 million in 2021. The total number of SUVs has increased more than sixfold in less than the last decade. In 2020, almost 30 million SUVs were sold worldwide, despite the corona crisis. In 2021, it was even approximately 5 million more. And there is no indication that this trend should change. Respectively – with the gradual onset of electromobility, the era of the largest SUVs, which are problematic in terms of weight and aerodynamics, will probably end, and interest will shift more to medium-sized SUVs and crossovers. However, before we get to which SUVs dominated the global market in the first half of the year, let’s first see what the situation was in the local market, i.e. Slovakia, in the same period. In the first six months of this year, 19,704 SUVs and crossovers were sold in Slovakia, while in the same period last year there were 17,160 cars in this category. Their sales thus increased year-on-year by approximately 13 percent, while the total sales of cars in the first half of this year in Slovakia were almost the same as a year ago. Only Dacia Duster “rubbed” between them. After the first half of the year, the Slovak king was the Hyundai Tucson (it is in 2nd place in the world ranking) with the sale of 1,336 units, but with a relatively small lead over the pair of pursuers, which are the Kia Sportage and the Toyota RAV4. It probably comes as no surprise that the Toyota RAV4 has been the unrivaled “unit” worldwide in this category for a long time. This is what the sales of SUVs and crossovers looked like in the first half of 2022 in Slovakia: Read more Asia versus the VW concern! This is the TOP 15 SUVs and crossovers for the first half of the year. Interesting is the significant retreat from the positions of French models. In the first six months, no French model managed to get among the 15 best-selling cars in this category in Slovakia. The best of them is the Citroën C4, which ranked only 22nd after the first half of the year. If we look at the global ranking, its leader is the already mentioned Toyota RAV4, which as the only SUV in 2021 was able to cross the million mark in terms of sales. Even though it did not reach the sale of half a million units after the first half of the year, with 459,000 units, it is very well on its way to conquering the million mark again at the end of this year. The second half of the year is traditionally stronger in terms of car sales. It is currently fourth, but it could just as well have been second. The cars in second to fourth place (Tesla Model Y, Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson) are separated by only two thousand sold cars, which is almost at the level of statistical deviation. Another interesting thing is that there is no Chinese model among the world’s bestsellers in this category yet, and two brands have double representation in it. It is probably not surprising that the first is Toyota, which with the RAV4 model occupies not only the first rung of the list, but also the larger Highlander in a very good seventh position. The second brand with double representation is Volkswagen. The Tiguan has traditionally been among the top 10 best-selling SUVs in the world, but now it has been joined by the T-Roc, which closes the TOP 10 list. Compared to the first quarter of this year, the Mercedes GLC and Jeep Grand Cherokee left the ranking, replaced by the Nissan Qashqai and the aforementioned VW T-Roc. The following is a ranking of the ten best-selling SUVs in the world, including photos and sales statistics
