today 12:10 | The Montreal Canadiens shocked the draft in July when they selected Juraj Slafkovski over projected top forward Shane Wright and made him first overall. The initial surprise of their choice began to fade quickly, and the 18-year-old Slovak became a star in the eyes of the fans as soon as she put on the jersey of the Canadian team. The young attacker gradually gained sympathy with his sincerity, sense of humor and performances in training sessions and in the preparation of new players. Almost three months have passed since his name was first heard in the Bell Centre. Although the new NHL season is rapidly approaching, the definitive answer to the question of whether Juraj Slafkovský is also part of it from the opening game remains in sight. The search for the right solution was somewhat complicated by the pre-season training, in which the Slovakian scored only one assist. Two experts Dan Rosen and Mike Morreale tried to solve the puzzle of how to deal with the talented forward. They held different opinions in the debate. “The question we are discussing here is, should Slafkovský play in the NHL this season? I think the answer is definitely yes. But that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t also play for Laval in the American Hockey League. The Canadiens can decide today that Slafkovský belongs in the NHL and change their mind tomorrow. The proximity of their AHL team to Montreal, just across the river, gives the club freedom with its potential moves. I think it’s important to get familiar with the NHL game, to understand the nuances, the smaller rink, the physicality and speed of the game, and yes, make mistakes. Give Slafkovski a chance at the start of the season and he might never leave Montreal,” says Dan Rosen for the NHL’s official website. photo gallery Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, Nick Suzuki Source: reuters The opposite position was taken by Mike Morreale, who would have given the Slovak striker much more time. “Not all number one picks are created equal, and while Slafkovský has the build of an NHL player, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s ready for an 82-game season. There’s no shame in spending your first pro season in the AHL, adjusting to less ice, building strength and improving skills, all while building confidence. I think it would be wise not to push Slafkovský to the NHL this year.” The AHL would be a ticket to the national team. One of Dan Rosen’s arguments for giving Juraj Slafkovský a chance in the NHL right from the start is the current state of the Canadiens roster. The team entered the reconstruction after the changes and will not think about great successes in the coming years. So why not give him the opportunity to improve against the best and learn the system? “Slafkovský may not be in the NHL this season. But that’s all the more reason why he should be familiar with the training under coach Martin St. at the beginning of this season. Louis, a Hall of Fame player who knows how to guide young players in the right way. Take a look at striker Cole Caufield and the progress he’s made since St. Louis became a coach last season. Giving Slafkovski the freedom to play his game and make mistakes at the NHL level will benefit him more than giving him the freedom to play his game and make mistakes in the AHL. And again, if it’s not overwhelming, the Canadiens always have the option of sending him to Laval, but that’s not where he should start.” photo gallery Tomáš Tatar, Filip Mešár and Juraj Slafkovský Source: reuters Mike Morreale admitted that Martin St. Louis in the position of coach would have a good influence on the Slovak and would be able to help him improve. However, he would only give him a chance for a few matches. According to him, the club has a lot of time precisely because Montreal is entering a rebuilding phase and does not need to pressure Juraj Slafkovský pointlessly. He also adds that the league is for professionals, not students. “The NHL is not a development league. It is for players who are already capable of playing big minutes in big moments and in stressful situations where quick decisions usually decide the outcome. That would be a big request from a European player who does not yet have the experience of surviving in the biggest hockey league in the world. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Slafkovsky play a few games early in the season with the Canadiens, but as we know, this will be St. Louis’ first full season. Louis and general manager Kent Hughes are working together on a rebuild that is expected to take at least two years. Why rush? Instead, let him learn and develop in the AHL. This scenario would also give the teenager a chance to represent Slovakia for the last time at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship in December with fellow countryman and Canadiens forward Filip Mesár.” See also how Slafkovský almost destroyed his bike again during the tests:
