Slovak female table tennis representatives Ema Labošová, Tatiana Kukuľková and Barbora Balážová and national team coach Jaromír Truksa Source: ITTF CHENGTU – Slovak table tennis women made it to the top eight teams at the World Team Championships in the Chinese city of Chengdu. In Wednesday’s round of 16, they eliminated the favored French women 3:1, while all three players Ema Labošová, Tatiana Kukuľková and Barbora Balážová shared the points. By progressing to the quarterfinals, the Slovaks achieved their best ever placing at the world team championship, until now they were thirteenth in the Malaysian Kuala Lumpur in 2000. Now they are assured of placing in 8th place, while they are still in the game for the medal positions. In the quarter-finals, they will meet the winner of the Japan – Republic of Korea match. “I considered France to be a good draw, although the girls didn’t really want Luxembourg. It worked out for us that we put Labošová in the number two position for the first time, because I assumed that she had more weapons than the two best French players. Kukuľková’s win against Chasselina. Kukuľková was able to keep her nerves in check and in the end she was lucky with some balls when she played ‘pigs’. Baška had the hardest time. The most is expected from the unit, and in addition she lost to young Pavade 9:11 in the fifth set. It’s a shame, because there were also chances to win. When she didn’t use four match points against Yuan Jianan at 2:0 and 10:6, I thought I was going to be taken straight to the hospital, but then she managed it and won not only her duel, but the whole meeting to a winning end. I have to praise the whole team. The girls performed well, did the right things, and the reward came. Being in the top eight at the World Team Championship is something incredible. We still have to get it in our heads,” said coach SR J aromír Truksa. Results – women – 2nd group: SLOVAKIA – France 3:1
