CAIRO. The container ship Ever Given, which blocked the Suez Canal in March, disrupting world trade, sailed across the aforementioned waterway again on Friday, this time without an accident.

The ship was part of a convoy of 26 vessels heading from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, according to the Suez Canal Administration (SCA). The ship used to unload its cargo in Europe and is now on its way to Asia.

The ship was escorted through a 193-kilometer canal by two tugs, with 36 ships sailing in opposite directions, the SCA said, highlighting the canal as “the shortest and fastest sea route connecting east to west.”

Ever Given, one of the largest cargo ships in the world, delivered its 18,300 containers to Rotterdam in the Netherlands, Felixstow in the UK and Hamburg in Germany. The ship is currently heading to China, writes the BBC.

During the journey from the Malaysian port of Tanjung Pelepas to Rotterdam, this 400-meter vessel ran aground in the Suez Canal on March 23, then stuck in it and blocked hundreds of other ships.

After a six-day rescue operation, the ship was released. However, she was subsequently detained by the local authorities near the town of Ismailia for three months, while a compensation agreement was negotiated between Egypt and the shipowners.

Following her release, SCA demanded compensation from the owner, the Japanese company Shoei Kisen, for rescue work and damage to the quay. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Egypt eventually settled for $ 550 million.

Egypt, which earns more than $ 5 billion a year from the canal, lost $ 12 million to $ 15 million in revenue each day as the canal closed.

Lloyd’s List, a shipping news firm, announced in April that a ship blockage had caused approximately $ 9.6 billion worth of goods to be stranded there every day.
