MADRID – Spanish cyclist Alejandro Valverde resigned from the Vuelta and Espana races after falling in the 7th stage. Valverde was in fourth place before the 7th stage in the standings. The Movistar driver tried to continue the race after the fall, but a few moments later he had to quit due to persistent pain. The camera caught him getting into the team car in tears. Examinations later confirmed a fracture of the right collarbone. According to his team, he was to undergo an operation in Murcia on Saturday.

For an experienced racer, this was the 15th appearance on the Vuelte and, according to the AFP agency, probably his last. Only twice did it happen that Valverde did not finish the prestigious race. The 2018 World Champion triumphed at the Vuelte in 2009, and has 11 victories in one-day classics and 17 stage laurels at Grand Tour events in the collection. He has long suggested that he may end his professional career after this season.
