The European Union should help Afghans in their homeland and neighboring countries to prevent a new wave of migration. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this in a phone call with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday. The AP agency informed about it.

Turkey’s and Greece’s top officials do not talk often. The relations of their countries, which are historical rivals, have been clouded in the last few years, especially by the exploration of mining in the Eastern Mediterranean or the migration from Turkey to Greece. But now both officials fear a significant influx of refugees from Afghanistan after the radical Islamic Taliban movement came to power.

According to the Turkish presidency, Erdogan told the Greek prime minister that “a new wave of migration will be necessary if the necessary measures are not taken” to help Afghanistan and neighboring countries such as Iran, where Afghan refugees will head before trying to reach Turkey and Europe.

Erdogan also said that Turkey, which had already strengthened security on its border with Iran, had also addressed the issue of Afghan migrants with Tehran. Greece has also strengthened border controls with Turkey this week due to the situation in Afghanistan.

Greece has stated that it will not allow the situation of 2015 to be repeated, when hundreds of thousands of people sailed on smugglers’ ships to the Greek islands off the nearby Turkish coast to try to obtain asylum in more prosperous European countries.
