NEW YORK – Swedish hockey goalie Henrik Lundqvist at the age of 39 has officially ended his career due to persistent heart problems. He told a press conference in Gothenburg that his health condition did not allow him to remain in the hockey carousel.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that it would be too risky to continue. I’ve dedicated 30 years of life to hockey. Now it’s time to leave the stage and start a new chapter. I’m really looking forward to the future.” quoted Lundqvista overseas media.

“King Henrik” was preparing to return to the goal and there was talk in the corridors of his possible return to the NHL, but his heart problems thwarted his plans. “I was hoping to be 100% fit in the summer. But the doctors told me that the inflammation was starting to get complicated again and that they would only help me with medications that I could take peacefully for another year,” added Lundqvist.

Heart problems since the draft

The Swedish goalkeeper has had heart problems since he was drafted. They were identified by club doctors at the first medical examination in New York Rangers. Regular inspections followed, and he did not complete the operation until January 8 this year in Cleveland.

Lundqvist captured a total of 887 games in the NHL for the New York Rangers in 15 seasons and won Vezin’s trophy for best goalkeeper. He won both the Olympic Games and the World Championships with Sweden, and twice he enjoyed winning silver medals at world championships.
