Swedish hockey goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist announced at a press conference in Gothenburg on Friday afternoon his final decision to end his active playing career.

He was drafted into the NHL in 2000 from the seventh round of the New York Rangers. Until 2005 he played in the home league in Frölunda HC. However, from the 05/06 season, it became an integral part of the New York Rangers.

He caught 1,017 games in the NHL during the fifteen seasons he all spent in New York. However, he never managed to win the Stanley Cup with the club. He wanted to change that, so before the 2020/21 season he decided to go to the Washington Capitals. The Rangers no longer counted on him, he didn’t get as much space and was pushed out by the younger goalkeepers.

However, he did not play for Washington because he developed heart problems and had to undergo surgery. After her, he spoke aloud that his condition was gradually improving and he was considering returning. There has been some speculation that we may still see King Henrik in the NHL. But now he has definitely ruled it out and ended his career.

Statement by Henrik Lundqvist:

The time has come. For the last 30 years, I have dedicated my life to hockey. Now it’s time for me to leave the game I love and start a new chapter in my life. The future excites me. Over the years, I have met many amazing people who have helped and inspired me.

There are many things I love about hockey. From the enthusiasm I felt when I was eight years old on my first training session, to the butterfly in my stomach, which I always had when I got on the ice in the best city in the world. I am extremely grateful for what hockey taught me and what it brought me. These lessons will never leave me.

Thanks to all the coaches and players who helped me during my career. Thank you Swedish hockey! From growing up and playing in Sweden, to world representation. I am most proud of those moments.

Thank you New York Rangers and New York City. I am a native Swede, but thanks to you I will always feel like a city dweller. Thanks to the NHL. This league was everything I dreamed of and much more. Thanks to hockey and fans. You gave me the meaning of life and I loved every second of it. Thank you all.
