Nord Stream, Borrell: “EU will give strong response to deliberate sabotage”

The European Union believes that there are sabotage actions as a probable cause of the damage suffered by the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines and threatening ‘strong’ countermeasures. This was announced in a note by EU foreign policy officer Josep Borrell, explaining that the Union “is deeply concerned about the damage to the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines which have caused losses in the international waters of the Baltic Sea”. “These incidents are not a coincidence and affect us all,” the Spanish politician observed, explaining that all the information available would indicate deliberate acts at the origin of the gas leaks from the pipes. “We will support any investigation aimed at gaining full clarity on what happened and why, and we will take further steps to increase our resilience in energy security,” said Borrell, calling any deliberate disruption of Europe’s energy infrastructure unacceptable, an action that would be welcomed by a “strong and compact response.” In the past few days, three leaks have been detected in the pipelines carrying gas from Russia to Europe via the Baltic Sea, in the exclusive economic zones of Denmark and Sweden off the island of Bornholm.
