Slovak power plants are at risk of bankruptcy: the government wants to tell the company at what price it should sell energy – Topky.sk

The majority stake in SE is controlled by the Italian concern Enel with the Energetický a priemyselný holding (EPH) group of the Czech businessman Daniel Křetínský. Another 34 percent of SE shares are held by the Slovak government. The CEO of SE Branislav Strýček told journalists that the company sold abroad roughly half of the planned production for next year. If the government ordered the company to supply the mentioned current to Slovakia, the company would have to fulfill its contracts and buy electricity for its customers at market prices, which had already risen significantly. According to the company, this would lead to its collapse. Slovenské elektrárne is heavily indebted in connection with the completion of two blocks of the Mochovce nuclear power plant. This month, after obtaining the relevant permit, the company started working on the start-up of the third unit of the Mochovce nuclear power plant, the fourth unit has not yet been completed there. Source: Topky/Vlado Anjel The aforementioned claims of SE were labeled as incorrect by the Ministry of Economy, according to its press department, the company informed it about its financial difficulties even before the aforementioned law was drafted. “Possible financial problems of Slovenské elektrární may be the result of incorrect management decisions, not the result of measures adopted by the parliament, which may not be implemented,” said Economy Minister Karel Hirman. According to him, the state would apply the planned measure only in the case of astronomically high energy prices, which would become unaffordable. This year, Slovakia agreed with the private shareholders of SE that the company will deliver part of its production to Slovak households in the next two years at a price that is significantly lower than the current market price.
