Trade unionists have been looking for doctors’ signatures and statements for several weeks. What so far many seemed to consider as a scare is becoming a reality. According to the Medical Trade Union Association, more than 1,200 doctors across the country have signed resignations. These are mainly doctors from key branches, such as internists, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, surgeons and traumatologists. Archives VIDEO Minister of Health Lengvarský: What development does he expect regarding the resignation of doctors? Allegedly, we are not threatened by a catastrophic scenario “The number of resignations that we have registered to date represents the number of doctors who, if they do not start, will collapse in individual hospitals,” warns Michal Gurka, a doctor from the Trauma Surgery Department of the Bratislava Hospital. Other doctors are also joining in, warning of the collapse of the healthcare system. According to the vice-president of the Košice hospital unions, Petr Zimmerman, there are more resignations by doctors than during Radič’s government in 2011. At that time, 1,200 doctors resigned, whose departure from Slovak hospitals and clinics caused the collapse of health care. The portal tvnoviny.sk informs about it. Salary increases are not enough In total, doctors represented by the Medical Trade Union have 8 demands. After they have been fulfilled and solved, they talk about withdrawing the submitted resignations. Among them are, in addition to salary increases, better education and better conditions in hospitals, as well as other systemic changes. The salary increase proposed by the Ministry of Health and Finance and approved by the government on Wednesday, September 21 is not enough for trade unionists. They are to discuss it in the abbreviated legislative procedure on Tuesday in the parliament. In total, the proposal addresses salary increases for 25 professions, in which the salary would depend on years of experience, but a maximum of 20 years. On average, they should improve by roughly 550 euros in gross. However, even this is not enough for the trade unionists, and they have therefore given the Ministry of Health an ultimatum to provide them with a timetable for when and how their demands will be addressed. Photo gallery (2) Source: TASR/Pavol Zachar Health Minister Vladimír Lengvarský (OĽaNO nominee) allegedly does not know the exact number of doctors who are determined to resign by the end of September. He stated this in Monday’s Radio Expres program. “We will have to wait for reality,” he said. If hundreds of doctors had realistically submitted their resignations by Friday of this week, the worst situation would occur on December 1 of this year, when the notice periods for many will expire. Allegedly, in the largest hospital in Bratislava – University Hospital Bratislava, in which five hospitals are affiliated, from 80 to 400 resignations were filed. “In the worst case scenario, care may be limited, but I believe that this will not happen,” said Lengvarský on Radio Expres. However, in an interview with Topky.sk on Thursday, the Minister of Health said that he believes that the imminent catastrophic scenario will finally be prevented and doctors will remain in hospitals. However, the Prime Minister is trying to convince the doctors not to resign. It is not possible to satisfy all the wishes of medical professions at once. Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OĽaNO) stated this on the social network. “We are going through difficult times. We are still recovering from the pandemic, Europe is facing an energy crisis and our immediate neighbor is at war. We cannot satisfy all the desires and wishes of the medical profession at once. It is simply not possible,” said the Prime Minister. He repeated that he saw no reason for the doctors’ statements. “If the doctors did not leave the patient until now and were able to endure the decline of the health care system tolerated for many years, there is no material reason for that now,” he added.
