CORONAVIRUS – This is a result that might convince those hesitant to get vaccinated. The Department of Research, Studies and Evaluation of Statistics (DREES) analyzed and gathered existing data on tests, hospitalizations and vaccination against Covid-19.

Result: between August 2 and 8, the vaccinated were 11 times less likely than the unvaccinated to be hospitalized in critical care because of the coronavirus. At the time, people completely vaccinated against the coronavirus accounted for 53% of the total population according to the Ministry of Solidarity and Health.

84% of critical care admissions and 76% of conventional hospital admissions were then unvaccinated, according to Drees. These figures are stable: between July 19 and 25, 87% of people admitted to critical care and 83% of those admitted to conventional hospitalization were unvaccinated.

The importance of the vaccine

This high proportion of unvaccinated in hospitalizations further demonstrates the importance of this serum in the fight against Covid-19. In fact, fully vaccinated patients represent respectively 9% of critical care admissions and 17% of conventional hospital admissions.

Vaccines were also 8 times numerous among the positives in all the tests carried out over the period, proof that vaccines still slow down contamination – even if, on this point, they are increasingly criticized. This figure should still be qualified: the vaccinated do not need to test themselves to access the place subject to the health pass, so many patients can escape this census.

This study of the DREES wants to be now weekly, to closely monitor the effectiveness of vaccines, at a time when more and more developed countries are considering distributing a third dose not only for the most vulnerable, but to stimulate protection after ten months.

Inform decisions

“The crossing of these bases makes it possible to better understand the epidemic situation and to clarify the decisions of public policy”, explains the DREES, in its press release. To obtain these results, the institution crossed three databases: SI-VIC, SI-DEP, VAC-SI. Respectively about hospitalizations, tests, and vaccination.

The DREES also emphasizes the consequences of delays in vaccination or the few barrier gestures applied in certain French departments: “The entry into critical care of unvaccinated people reached particularly high levels in the French overseas territories and in the regions of the Mediterranean coast ”.

On August 20, 60% of the population received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, but the pace of the vaccine campaign is collapsing, with currently around 179,000 first injections per week, against more than 300, when the needle was turning at full speed. Each day the epidemic progresses a little more, raising fears of a saturation of hospitals, potentially at the start of the school year according to the Pasteur Institute. Currently, 2,049 Covid-19 patients are admitted to critical care. This is 13% more than last week.
