In his first interview after his release from captivity, British citizen Aiden Aslin described to the British newspaper The Sun how he was captured and then tortured by Russian soldiers during the fighting in eastern Ukraine. He was held in Ukraine for five months, he was released this week as part of a large exchange of prisoners. He said he was treated worse than a dog, beaten, stabbed and had to sing the Russian national anthem every morning. “I didn’t think I would get out alive,” said Aslin, who was reunited with his mother and his Ukrainian fiancee on Saturday after many months. Although he was born in Newark, Britain, in 2018 he started a new life in Ukraine, where he fell in love. After the Russian invasion, he joined the Ukrainian troops fighting against the Russian occupiers. The situation worsened when his unit ran out of both food and ammunition during the bloody siege of Mariupol in April. Before giving up, he called his mother and his fiancee to tell them that “no matter what happens, we’ll see each other again”. Death penalty by firing squad Soon, however, he began to fear that his days were numbered. When the Russians looked at his passport, they immediately found out that he was not Ukrainian. “I told them I was from Britain and got punched in the face,” Aslin described. He was subsequently taken to the separatist Donetsk People’s Republic, where he was constantly beaten with a baton during interrogation. “One of the officers was smoking a cigarette and asked me: ‘Do you know who I am?'” When he replied that he did not know, the Russian continued: “I am your death”. “He said, ‘See what I did to you?’ and pointed to my back. Then I saw the knife and realized he stabbed me,” Aslin described. Subsequently, the officer asked the captured Briton if he wanted a “quick or beautiful death”. When he replied that he was quick, the officer laughed and said, “No, you will have a beautiful death and I will take care of it.” There were four in a small cell for two people and they had to sleep on a mattress full of cockroaches and lice. Because they didn’t have a toilet, they used empty bottles. In May, a court in the self-proclaimed pro-Russian Donetsk People’s Republic sentenced him to death. He was informed that he would be shot. “During the entire five months in captivity, I could not cry. When I heard that I was sentenced to death, I wanted to cry, but I simply could not,” he described. “However, despite all that I had been through, I knew that sooner or later I would see the light at the end of the tunnel. That I would come back and see Diane and my family,” he added. Abramovich shook his hand. Everything changed only this week, when he was taken from the cell, his head was covered and taken by truck to the airport in Rostov-on-Don. There were other fellow prisoners, John Harding, Shaun Pinner, Dylan Heal and Andrew Hill. “I heard one of the soldiers say the word exchange, I started to rejoice, but I kept saying to myself, ‘Stop, stop. Maybe you misheard yourself,'” Aslin said. When they arrived at the airport several hours later, he tried to find out where . “I was looking at a group of Saudi Arabians and one of the guys was saying, ‘Isn’t that Roman Abramovich?’ described the discharged Briton. That’s when they realized they were free. On the plane, Abramovich then shook Aslin’s hand and told him: “I’m glad to have you here.” According to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the release of the captured foreigners was mediated by Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman. A key role was also played by oligarch Roman Abramovich, whom London put on the sanctions list after the Russian military attack on Ukraine because of his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. 01 – Modified: 2022-09-25 10:24:51 – Feat.: 1 – Title: Putin’s close allies criticize the mobilization, publicly expressed concern about excesses 02 – Modified: 2022-09-23 17:47:44 – Feat. : 1 – Title: Michel: The Kremlin mobilizes against an imaginary enemy.
