Haiti’s former first lady describes her husband’s murder 4:13 (CNN) — Colombian President Gustavo Petro apologized to Haiti for the involvement of Colombian citizens in the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise. “Today I apologized to Haiti for the assassination of its president committed by Colombian mercenaries,” Petro said in a tweet published on Wednesday night. Moise was killed in his home on July 7, 2021. According to investigators, 26 Colombians and two Haitian-Americans were involved. The men insisted they were innocent; one of them told CNN at the time: “We were useful idiots to someone else…but we didn’t commit this crime.” In December 2021, five of the Colombian suspects told CNN that they are innocent and had been tortured and strung up. All of the former Colombian soldiers told CNN they were hired as private security and told they were going to provide security for a Haitian presidential candidate.
