Covid Australia today, high infections in Sydney: lockdown and curfew

The lockdown in Sydney, Australia, has been extended at least until the end of September, where the number of Covid-19 infections continues to remain at alarming levels due to the spread of the delta variant. The authorities, local media report, have also imposed a curfew in 12 districts of the city where the situation is more serious. Although Sydney residents have been in lockdown since late June, infections have doubled in the past week, with 642 new cases registered today and 681 Thursday. “I apologize to the vast majority of people in those communities who are doing the right thing, but for our health and safety we have to make these tough decisions,” said New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian, adding that the curfew – in force from 21 to 5 – aims to “reduce the movement of young people”.
