Used cars hit the ceiling here. They ignore inflation and diesels play in a different league – HNonline.sk

For decades, with a few exceptions, one indisputable law ruled the roller coaster market. The older the car, the more worn it was and the more mileage it had, the lower its price was. However, the established order was completely disrupted by the pandemic, which brought something unprecedented. Used cars were getting older, they were getting more mileage, they were wearing out, but even so, their price was increasing. The reason was the unprecedented production problems of manufacturers caused by the chip and logistics crisis, which was subsequently added to by the war in Ukraine. This caused an acute shortage of new vehicles, which put pressure on prices. And not a little. According to AAA Auto data, the average value of the popular Škoda Fabia under the age of three increased by almost four thousand euros in the past year alone. Octavia in the same category rose again from 18,700 euros to 25,500. Prices rose this year as well, and the ceiling of rides seemed out of reach for many due to the rising value of new cars, inflation and the conflict with the eastern neighbor. Paradoxically, however, the opposite happened. “It is confirmed that used cars have reached a certain price ceiling, around which they have been clinging for five months. Despite the year-on-year inflation rate exceeding 11 percent, it is positive that the prices of used cars did not rise above the April level for five months. This development so far can already be considered a trend,” says Petr Vaněček, operations director of the AAA Auto and Mototechna network of centers, adding that the average price of a used vehicle in Slovakia is currently 7,500 euros.
