Slovakia is not one of the most popular locations among Hollywood filmmakers, such as the neighboring Czech Republic, where the feature film The Gray Man with Ryan Gosling was recently shot in Prague. Nevertheless, from time to time a large film production will come to us, as is happening now. For Slovakia, this means not only visibility, but also investment in millions of euros.
Slovakia has happened the scene of the filming of new episodes of the third series of the successful American series Jack Ryan, which is based on the famous book by Tom Clancy. He plays the lead role favorite John Krasinski, who became famous in the successful comedy series The Office or in the horror film Silent Place, which he also directed, similar to his second part. The series is being shot in the production of the Paramount film studio and the Amazon company, on whose streaming platform Slovaks can also watch Jack Ryan’s first two series. In addition to Slovakia, the third series will also be produced in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Austria, Greece and Spain.
As the site informs Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic (MK), filming in Slovakia lasts two weeks in the Košice Region and in the districts of Zvolen, Žilina and Čadca. The staff consists of more than 450 filmmakers, of which up to 250 from Slovakia, which, according to the Ministry of Culture, required accommodation in more than 70 hotels and boarding houses in the given regions of Slovakia.
“Overall the creators of the series spent much longer time in Slovakia – the preparatory phase lasted up to three months, during which they worked in their production facilities in Bratislava and in the regions concerned due to production preparations. Special film, aviation and military equipment from Slovakia will also be used for filming. The project plans to invest about 5 million euros in the territory of our country, ” informs the Ministry of Culture.
The shooting was praised by Hollywood producer Howard Ellis, who, in addition to Jack Ryan, has such successful films as Black Widow, Gemimi Man and Terminator: Dark Fate.
“When filming the Jack Ryan project as much as possible we use the beautiful natural scenery that Slovakia offers and the government of the Slovak Republic was incredibly helpful in everything. The Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Finance or the Ministry of Agriculture have been able to create such conditions for us together and through extremely accommodating cooperation, which are practically unavailable in other countries of the world, ” Ellis said at this week’s press conference.
According to Howard, the filming of the Jack Ryan series was already his seventh in Slovakia. He sees a great future for our country in connection with the film industry and the prospect of attracting large international film projects.
The filmmakers closed on August 13 due to filming the D3 motorway at 10 days, used by the sections in Kysucie and Považie, including the Svrčinovec, Poľana and Považský Chlmec tunnels. National Highway Company (NDS) for filming postponed the autumn maintenance of the highway. The filmmakers will end filming on the highway this weekend, and repairs will begin on D3 on Monday.
Last year, the intensity of subsidies from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund for film projects implemented in Slovakia increased from 20% to 33% eligible expenditures of the budget of the film project, thanks to which the interest of foreign producers in filming in Slovakia subsequently increased.
“World-class film production has visited Slovakia. My sincere wish is that there should be more and more similar projects, because as a country we have an incredible potential, whether in the form of exteriors, but also human potential, which is constantly praised by foreign productions, “said Minister of Culture Natália Milanová after a personal meeting with the creators of the series. However, he perceives the absence of film studios in Slovakia as our weakness.
