23-year-old Gabriela filed a criminal complaint at the District Headquarters of the Bratislava II Police Force. She was contacted by James Hector, who introduced himself as a Europol employee and spoke English. He informed her that credit cards bearing her name were found abroad during the raid, which were used to buy illegal weapons and drugs. “Under stress, the victim answered a question about the balance of money on her account, as well as her address of permanent residence. James Hector then informed Gabriela that Europol would come to block her account,” described the police. He navigated her over the phone to install “AnyDesk” for shared access, according to police. He further “helped” her create an account on the Wise site and she logged into her bank account, where the unknown perpetrator saw her account balance. The man then asked her to transfer the money to an account created on Wise’s website to keep it safe. “After persuasion, she finally made transactions worth 490 euros, 490 euros and 500 euros, which she sent to an account in Thailand. With the transfers made, together with the fees, she incurred a total loss of 1,500 euros,” the police said. The police warns about these cases In this context, it warns again that in the case of similar messages and phone calls, people should not provide any of their authentication and verification data for any banking services or products. “At the same time, if an unknown person requests payment card data and internet banking service data, or login data and password in any form, do not provide them under any circumstances,” urged the police.
