The series ‘The Crown’ increases its audience after the death of Elizabeth II

The first season of the streaming platform’s award-winning series about Elizabeth II’s seven-decade reign entered Netflix’s Top 10 this week, the company revealed Tuesday. The series, starring Claire Foy and Olivia Colman in the role of Queen Elizabeth (young and old), logged 17.6 million hours of viewing, according to the company. Those numbers placed it as the seventh most watched English-language program of the last week, ahead of the last season of ‘Stranger Things’. Last week, the producers of the drama series reported that they were halting production on the sixth season after news broke of the 96-year-old monarch’s death. “As a mark of respect, filming on ‘The Crown’ was suspended today,” the show’s producers said in a statement to CNN on Friday. “Filming will also be suspended on the day of her funeral” scheduled for September 19, they added. Created by Peter Morgan, “The Crown” swept the drama categories at last year’s Emmy Awards, winning the night’s top prize for Outstanding Drama Series. Other cast members including Colman, Josh O’Connor (who played Prince Charles), Tobias Menzies (who played Prince Philip) and Gillian Anderson (who played Margaret Thatcher) also took home awards. The next season of the series will premiere in November. “Harry Potter” star Imelda Staunton will be the third actress to take on the role of Queen Elizabeth.
