Royal wedding in difficult times: Elizabeth II’s dress. (†96) had to save for a year! – Topky.sk

In 1947, when Queen Elizabeth II. she was marrying Prince Philip, Britain was struggling with the great economic crisis and trying to recover from the consequences of the Second World War. As a result, the whole nation was dependent on ration cards for food, materials and clothing. And the royal family was no exception. Queen Elizabeth II. and Prince Phillip Elizabeth II. from the moment Prince Philip proposed to her in 1946, she had been saving up her ration cards to have enough for her dream wedding dress. When she got engaged, she received 200 tickets as a gift and saved the rest. In order for the princess to be able to cover her entire dress, women from all over the UK sent her their coupons – but this was against the law, so she had to send them back. There was also a problem with the purchase of the fabric itself. “Tulle was easy to get, but satin was hard to come by in those days,” Lady Pamela Hicks told People magazine, adding that the bridesmaids wore tulle dresses and the princess a combination of satin and tulle. Their preparation took only a short 3 months and the designer was inspired by a painting by the famous Italian artist Sandro Botticelli called Primavera. A total of 350 women worked on the dress, and they all had to swear to secrecy so that the details of the wedding dress would not get into the press. “The Americans rented an apartment opposite to see the dress through the window. However, Norman Hartnell (designer, editor’s note) plastered the windows with lime and muslin so that you couldn’t see inside,” revealed seamstress Betty Foster, who was 18 years old at the time. It is also interesting that Elizabeth II. she only tried on her wedding dress for the first time on her wedding day. The reason is the tradition according to which trying on a wedding dress in advance brings bad luck. Interesting facts about the wedding dress: – 10 thousand pieces of pearls were sewn onto the dress – care was taken to ensure that the silk and satin that was used to make the dress was produced in Britain, the pearls were imported from America – the palace had to assure the public that the threads the silkworms that were used to make the silk fabric came from China and not from one of the countries with which Great Britain fought the war.
