Successes are carried with us throughout life. Even the waiter Marián Žonda, who had the honor of being the only Slovak to serve Her Majesty, knows his own story. In 2016, he worked in London first as a dishwasher and later as a waiter. The meeting with the queen took place at the competition of the best hotel staff in the capital of England. It should also be added that the nice Slovak met her a few years later! And that at the celebration of her 90th birthday. “It was my third shift in the mentioned hotel, I was not even an employee of the hotel, but an employee of the agency that appointed waiters…” he mentioned in the Marquesas Telerán. As he himself said, after only two services he was offered a secret VIP promotion. After her acceptance, what even he himself did not expect followed. Weeks of preparation, tailor-made suits and he even had to document his criminal record. “The preparations were almost a week in advance, which is quite unusual. By default, the given hall is prepared for a conference or dinner of this nature on that day,” noted Marián. He did not understand what or who it was actually about, when it was made such a halo. They kept it a secret from him until the last moment. “If I knew who it was, I would understand,” he said with a smile. Only on D-Day did he find out that the Queen herself would be visiting the hotel. “She was an incredible person, she didn’t push herself… The first moment she saw me, she smiled at our height difference,” he recalled. The man from Banská Bystrica didn’t even speak English properly when he met her. However, when they were choosing which waiter would have contact with her upon entering and hand her a glass of prosecco, he signed up first. As Marián concluded, after this experience, which he also included in his CV, countless job offers started pouring in.
