The proclamation of Carlos III begins a real transition of 10 days

Becoming king of England is both a simple reality – Elizabeth II’s heir was already so from the moment her mother died – and a long and ceremonious process full of acts, proclamations, processions and oaths. The succession was launched as soon as the death of the queen was confirmed last Thursday and will last for a period of ten days full of pomp and pageantry that will culminate with the state funeral of Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey. Some of her phrases The most outstanding were addressed to her mother: “She made sacrifices for duty. Her dedication and devotion as a sovereign never wavered, in times of change and progress, in times of joy and celebration, and in times of sadness and loss.” He was also proud of his children and proclaimed William as the new Prince of Wales: “With Katherine at his side, our new Prince and Princess of Wales, I know, will continue to inspire and direct our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the center of land where vital help can be provided. I also wanted to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives abroad,” added the new king who did not want to miss the opportunity to say a few words about how the world has changed in the 70 years of his mother’s reign: “We have seen our society become one of many cultures and many religions (…) Our values have been maintained and must remain constant,” proclaimed a Carlos III who was already speaking as king but whose official proclamation, protocol requires, is set for this Saturday. Day 1: Proclamation The chosen setting is the Palace of Saint James in London, the time: eleven o’clock the morning – Spanish time – and the procedure has to be carried out in front of a ceremonial body known as the Adhesion Council. It is made up of members of the Privy Council, a group of past and present senior MPs and Lords, as well as some senior civil servants, Commonwealth High Commissioners and the Mayor of London. In theory, more than 700 people they are entitled to attend the Accession Council, but given the short notice at which it is convened, the actual number is likely to be much lower. In the last Accession Council was in 1952, when Elizabeth II was proclaimed, around 200 attended. Tradition indicates that the king does not attend. At the meeting, the Lord President of the Privy Council (currently Penny Mordaunt MP) will announce the death of Queen Elizabeth II and a proclamation will be read aloud. The proclamation consists of a series of prayers and promises including a eulogy of the previous monarch and a commitment to support the new king. At the end, prominent institutional figures such as the new Prime Minister Liz Truss, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Lord Chancellor sign the proclamation. Once this is done, the Adhesion Council meets again, this time with the presence of the new king and his Privy Council, which includes Camilla, the new Queen, and her son William, who are also councillors. The protocol calls for Charles III to make a declaration in accordance with a tradition dating back to the early 18th century in which he swears to preserve the Church of Scotland and possibly makes a first public appearance as proclaimed king. The proclamation is announced with a fanfare of trumpets that precedes a public proclamation declaring Carlos as the new king. It is an official known as the Garter King of Arms who reads the proclamation from a balcony above the Friary Court of St James’s Palace. Shout ‘God save the King’ and play the new national anthem with lyrics changed from ‘God save the Queen’ to the revamped ‘God save the king’, followed by volleys of cannon fire in Hyde Park, the Tower of London and from warships.During all this process the queen’s coffin remains in Balmoral Palace.Day 2: Proclamation in Edinburgh, Cardiff and BelfastAt noon the proclamation announcing Charles as King is scheduled to be read in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. The Queen’s coffin is expected to be transferred by hearse from Balmoral to Edinburgh’s Palace of Holyroodhouse by road on Sunday to rest until the following day.Day 3: Royal Mile ProcessionPlans for on Monday include a ceremonial procession along the Royal Mile to St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh, a motion of condolence on the passing of Elizabeth II is also expected in Westminster and the new king to announce the dates to start a tour in the following days that takes him to visit Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as part of Operation Spring Tide. Day 4: The Queen arrives in London Tuesday would be the day appointed for the coffin of the Queen is airlifted to London. She there she will rest in Buckingham Palace. Also that day she would start a rehearsal for what will be the ceremonial procession of the coffin of Elizabeth II in London. Day 5: Great procession in London On Wednesday, if everything follows the planned script, the first great ceremony in London will take place. On that day, the Queen’s coffin will be carried on a chariot from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall for her repose. Members of the royal family are expected to attend a short service at the abbey and hundreds of thousands of people will file past the casket to pay their respects over the next five days. At some point during these wake days, the most important members of the royal family are expected to stand guard around the coffin, a tradition known as the Vigil of the Princes. Days 6, 7 and 8: Vigil and State Visits There are no scheduled Thursdays more ceremonies than continuing with the wake of Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Hall. On Friday and Saturday the new king’s agenda would continue with his visits to the different nations of the United Kingdom and with his state meetings in London. Day 9: Arrival of foreign heads of state and royal families Next Sunday, September 18, the arrival of the first heads of state and members of foreign royal families is expected to begin in London to attend the Queen’s state funeral Elizabeth II which, if all goes according to plan, will take place on Monday 19th September. Day 10: State Funeral The Queen’s State Funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey and the Queen’s coffin is expected to arrive from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey in a battle chariot pulled by sailors. She will be accompanied in the procession, on foot, by members of the British royal family. The service will be televised and two minutes of silence will be observed nationwide. Following the funeral, the Queen’s coffin will be taken to Windsor Castle for a televised burial service. The coffin will be lowered into the royal vault and its final resting place will be the King George VI Memorial Chapel at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. Senior members of the royal family will attend the private burial ceremony. The coronation will have to wait The culminating and most symbolic point of the entire succession process would be the coronation of Carlos III. However, due to the preparation required, it is not likely to take place very soon. There is no date yet. Queen Elizabeth acceded to the throne in February 1952, but was not crowned until June 1953. For the past 900 years, the coronation has taken place in Westminster Abbey: William the Conqueror was the first monarch to be crowned there , and Carlos will be number 40. It is an Anglican religious service led by the Archbishop of Canterbury. At the climax of the ceremony, he will place the St Edward’s Crown on Charles’s head, a solid gold crown dating from 1661 and weighing 2.23 kilos. This is the centerpiece of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London, and is worn only by the monarch at the time of coronation.
