Dune 2: filming of the sequel could be compromised – Tom’s Guide

Denis Villeneuve, the director of Dune, explains that several factors could prevent the sequel from seeing the light of day.

Great classic of science fiction literature, Dune set to hit theaters next October. On the production side, we find Denis Villeneuve, brilliant filmmaker, already at the origin of Blade Runner 2049. For this adaptation, the director has surrounded himself with a cast of choice, with Timothée Chalamet and Josh Brolin. This reboot of the famous franchise enjoys a colossal budget of 165 million dollars. The film traces the journey of the Atreides house in full conquest of the planet “Dune” Arrakis. This earth conceals within it a spice allowing to travel in space and to develop increased mental capacities.

If a sequel is already being considered, the studio has not yet given the green light. And several factors could prevent this second part from finally seeing the light of day.

It’s no longer a secret: the global pandemic is playing a part in the numbers of movie releases. Yes Dune does not meet his audience, Warner could ultimately decide never to validate a sequel. Even if the studio adores the work of Villeneuve, the profitability of the first opus will be a decisive factor in launching the project. “We had to prove that Dune is a nice, popular movie. I think we have already won on this point. If we do badly at the box office, the sequel may never see the light of day. They want things to go in the right direction. But I remain very optimistic ” says Villeneuve.

Even if the director does not agree with the simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max, he fully understands this strategic choice. For Villeneuve, the only enemy of cinema is now the pandemic. The latter thinks that the cinema is an experience that should be lived indoors on the big screen, and certainly not on his sofa. For now, the marketing strategy for the release of the first opus suggests a future popular success.

If nothing is acquired yet, Dune should be the feel of fall. It’s a safe bet that Villeneuve’s work will be dubbed by the public as well as by professional critics. If all goes well, Dune 2 should therefore see the light of day in the coming years.
