BRATISLAVA. Ministerial inspections, a reprimand from the head of the court and a fight with police officers at the borders for non-compliance with anti-pandemic measures did not help.

Judge Branislav Harabin did not change his dismissive attitude to the orders of hygienists, but his job classification at the District Court in Bratislava I is changing.

In practice, this means that it will no longer come into contact with ordinary participants in proceedings or prosecutors and handles more or less administrative activities. These include approving bankruptcies and restructurings or determining the repayment schedule.

An addendum to the work schedule was issued by the head of the court, Ján Golian, at the end of July. He came with him shortly after he had to deal with Harabin repeatedly for his boycott of anti-pandemic measures.

Judge Harabin is just like his father Stefan Harabin the opponent of the wearing of drapes and the decree of hygienists describes as null and void. In June, the SME newspaper described the situation in which Prosecutor Norbert Fecko and Harabin refused to be in the courtroom without the judge putting on mask and the hearing had to be adjourned. Since then, the same situation has been repeated several more times.

The court’s management acknowledges that the purpose of the changes is also to keep Harabin from contacting the parties, as it does not comply with the regulations in force. However, he also talks about the under-dimensioning of the commercial law body.

“For comparison, I state that in 2015 the commercial court of the local court consisted of 18 judges, in 2021 there are 14 judges in this panel, with the fact that in the near future it is planned to transfer three judges to the Regional Court in Bratislava,” explained the vice-president René Milták.
