Changes in the genitals during pregnancy: from an increase in size to a different color – 20minutos.es

Violeta Mangriñán has already given birth, but in June she surprised everyone with news that she shared with her followers on social media: “The most intimate parts change size.” This generated a wave of doubts on the part of those women who have never gone through a pregnancy and that is that nobody has talked about it. What happens to the genitals? Increase in the size of the genitals During pregnancy, a series of changes occur that evolve at the same time as gestation. The uterus begins to expand, the muscles of the vagina relax to become more elastic and allow the baby to pass, among another series of totally normal processes during the trimesters. But, it is in the last one that the changes are notable. This is because near the end of the third trimester the body is already prepared for the expulsion. That is why these changes can affect the size of the genitals, which will be much more swollen and larger, something that often surprises women when they wax closer to the date they will give birth. Appearance of vulvar varicose veins The increase in blood in the genital area during pregnancy (related to the previously described inflammation) can contribute to the appearance of varicose veins in the intimate area. When this happens, the genitals will turn a very characteristic bluish color that can scare future mothers. In addition, they cause discomfort. Frequently changing posture or raising your legs can help improve the pressure that can be felt when vulvar varicose veins appear. However, these usually disappear spontaneously after giving birth, although in most cases they take a few weeks to do so, so you should be patient. Changes in color Another change in the genitals that surprises pregnant women is the Dark color. As explained in the article Pregnancy and skin. Physiological changes and disorders with aesthetic repercussions, “hyperpigmentation of the nipples, areolas, external genitalia and abdominal linea alba occurs in 100% of pregnant women.” Those responsible are the hormones, such as the increase in estrogen, which will condition this change in color, which together with the inflammation and increase in size of the genitals can generate a remarkable astonishment. Despite this, after the discharge and during recovery, little by little everything returns to its original state. Now we know why Violeta Mangriñán was so surprised after having seen her genitals in the last stage of her pregnancy. Changes in the body that affect the intimate area and that should not generate fear. The belly is not the only thing that grows, it is that the body is preparing to give birth, an experience that is truly incredible. Bibliography Barbed, LA (2006).
