Today, day 192 of the war: Ukraine reinforces its offensive in Kherson and attacks Russian communication linesUkraine has reinforced its offensive in Kherson oblast, where it is reportedly carrying out positional battles, according to the latest report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). In addition, Ukrainian forces continue to attack Russian land lines of communications and logistics nodes, especially throughout the south and center of the region. Russian troops, meanwhile, have carried out new ground attacks south and northeast of Bakhmut , as well as along the western and northern outskirts of the city of Donetsk. Moscow also continues to put pressure on the Ukrainian rearguards at these points and could be reassigning teams in Donbas and Crimea to increase its influence in the area, the US think tank added. In Kharkov, the Ukrainian General Staff has confirmed the attack on a Russian warehouse in Novoosynove, about 100 km southeast of the city. Meanwhile, tension continues at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, where a team from the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA) will remain to ensure that it remains in good condition. Friday, September 2, day 191 of the war: The international community will keep the Zaporizhia plant under surveillanceOn the 191st day since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, attention continues to be focused on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, where the visit of the International Organization of Atomic Energy (IAEA), which has decided to leave a permanent inspection in place, concerned about the “enormous danger” posed by the fighting in the environment of the largest nuclear facility in Europe. Russian forces have carried out attacks in northwest Slovyansk, south and northeast Bakhmut, and northwest and southwest Donetsk city. For their part, in the Kherson region, in the south of the country, Ukrainian troops continue their attack on Russian logistics nodes and key positions to support their counteroffensive, according to the latest report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Faced with Ukrainian resistance and attacks in these areas, the US think tank believes “it is likely that the Russian occupation authorities will increasingly recognize their inability to successfully hold” false accession referendums in the occupied territories of Ukraine, one of the objectives main politicians that Moscow had set out to consolidate its advances. Thursday, September 1, day 190 of the war: The focus of the conflict returns to Zaporizhia The IAEA delegation sent to supervise the activity of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has managed to arrive, although several hours late. The attacks in the Energodar area and the successive reproaches between Ukraine and Russia, which blame each other, had forced the visit to be temporarily postponed. In Moscow, different sources assure that “the Ukrainian counteroffensive was a failure almost as soon as it was launched” . This is how the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) picks it up, which considers that it is still early to evaluate the counterattack to recover the south of the country. In this sense, the British Ministry of Defense assures that Ukraine is using long-range projectiles against Russian “logistic and command locations”. Meanwhile, Russian troops continue bombing cities such as Kharkov, Bakhmut and Donetsk. The US ISW notes that Kremlin-designated forces in Crimea are rebuilding the peninsula’s air defense systems in order to minimize recurring drone strikes. Previous weekOn February 24, the Russian invasion of Ukraine began with air strikes and offensives on the ground. In the 27th week of war, from August 25 to 31, attention has continued to focus on the situation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, occupied by Russian troops, and around which the fighting could trigger a nuclear accident. A visit by inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA) has tried to ease the tension. While Russian attacks are concentrated in the Donetsk region and in the north, the Russian counteroffensive continues in the south to undermine army positions of Putin in Kherson, bordering Crimea and the first to fall into Russian hands at the beginning of the invasion. In the following link you can consult the diary of the conflict in that week and access those of the previous weeks. On these mapsThe situation in Ukraine is constantly changing, but the flow of information is not constant. Therefore, this piece is not intended to be exhaustive, but rather to provide a general overview of the attacks. It is possible that past events will continue to appear on the maps and others may take time to reflect. There is a methodological debate that assigning entire geographical areas to the control of Russian troops may imply that there is no resistance or counterattacks on the part of the Ukrainian armed forces. However, these maps seek to visualize the areas in which the advances and maneuvers of Russian troops take place, adopting a standard military approach to daily recording the movements of a conventional maneuver war such as the one waged by Russia in Ukraine. This monitoring of maneuvers and tactics is essential to understand and evaluate the evolution of the war. The information on the advance of the Russian troops comes from the reports of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in Washington together with the Critical Threats project . Its daily updates indicate the parts of Ukraine that are under Russian control, understanding ‘control’ as influence over an area against an enemy. In this sense, the colored areas do not imply the complete elimination of local resistance. To complete the information, updates from the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine are used, as well as data, videos and photographs provided by news agencies, international media and other sources of reliable information reviewed by the DadoRTVE team.
