Salma Hayek Pinault (original name Salma Valgarma Hayek Jiménez) was born on September 2, 1966 in the city of Coatzacoalcos into a well-to-do family of a Mexican opera singer and a Lebanese businessman (this explains the actress’ Arabic first name). She attended a Catholic school in New Orleans, in her teenage years she lived with her aunt in Houston, Texas. She enrolled to study international relations at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, but dropped out to pursue acting ambitions. She succeeded in the Mexican capital at the age of 23, when she was cast in the telenovela Teresa (1989). Three years later, the young aspiring actress moved to Los Angeles to try her luck in Hollywood. After her role in the film My Crazy Life (Mi vida loca, 1993), she was approached by director Robert Rodriguez, who happened to see her performing on television and the actress impressed him with her views. He offered her a role in the pilot for the television series Roadracers (1994).
