Evening with high stakes for France 2. This Tuesday evening in prime time, the public service channel brings up to date “Masterchef”, the competition for amateur cooks launched in France in August 2010 on TF1. But what the hell did France 2 do in this mess? Not sure. Seven years ago, the public had severely sanctioned season 5 of the show. Only 2.69 million viewers, i.e. 13.6% of the public and 17% of Women responsible for purchasing under 50 (FRDA-50), the channel’s priority target, had salivated on June 25, 2015, in front of this which was already presented as a new version of the culinary competition. Author of two of the worst bonus audiences of 2015 on TF1, “Masterchef” was then relegated without delay to… NT1 (now TFX). And the hearings collapse, the mayonnaise being visibly irretrievable. On September 3, 2015, the program left the antenna in general indifference, retaining the attention of 590,000 faithful, or 3.5% of the public. An acceptable score for NT1 but catastrophic for “Masterchef”, whose most followed final, in 2011 (season 2), had sustained nearly 7 million gourmands and 30% of the public. Admittedly, France 2 is not NT1 but the return of a worn and damaged brand, moreover stamped TF1, does it make sense on the public service? “‘Masterchef’ is a program that is native to the public service, on the BBC”, defended Nicolas Daniel, head of the magazines unit of France Télévisions, last month during the presentation of the program to the press. Codes associated with the programs of private channels But Agathe Lecaron, new incarnation of the show, formerly presented by Carole Rousseau, the late Sébastien Demorand and Sandrine Quétier, may well promise “a slightly different version” of the “Masterchef” of twelve years ago – “with ultra eco-responsible values”, respect for nature and the environment and the fight against waste – the program is nonetheless based on competition. From this Tuesday evening, viewers will not be mistaken. Of the 18 candidates behind the stoves, only 9 will finally put on the “Masterchef” apron and only one will win, in eight weeks, the competition and the 100,000 euros that accompany the title of “Masterchef” 2022. “I’m not putting pressure on you but still I put it to you”, summarizes the host in the trailer.
