Android Auto: with Android 12, the application will stop working on smartphones – Frandroid

According to the findings of XDA-Developers and Google’s confirmation to 9to5Google, the Android Auto application for mobile will stop working on smartphones with the arrival of Android 12, in favor of the “Driving mode” integrated into Google Assistant.

Introduced at Google I / O 2014, the operating system Android Auto has since come a long way and is now an integral part of an automotive and connected experience. Two years later, the American group had the idea of ​​developing a full-fledged application, which we find today under the name of “Android Auto for mobile”.

Except that a new driving mode integrated into Google Assistant and deployed in 2019 has been in the shadows. This famous function starts automatically during a Google Maps trip, and allows access to many functions (launching a playlist, changing the route, sending SMS, calling) thanks to your voice.

2019, a turning point

Clearly, if you are used to using Google Maps, the experience is clearer, smoother and more intuitive compared to a third-party application. Also in 2019, the Mountain View firm announced that it would remove “Android Auto for mobile”, before turning back.

Two years later, Google seems finally decided to put an end to the app. At the time of launching the latter, some users – cited by XDA Developers – received an explicit pop-up message: Android Auto is now only available for car screens. In other words, its mobile version would no longer be relevant.

For his part, XDA Developers had the same experience with a single Pixel phone running Android 12. Further testing was done, but “Android Auto for mobile” worked fine.

Google confirms the news

However, Google has officially confirmed to 9to5Google that the application will stop working with the release of Android 12. Rest assured: older versions of the OS will continue to support it. Only smartphones equipped with Android 12 will ignore it.

“Android Auto for mobile” was therefore only a temporary solution destined to fall into oblivion. The Android Auto OS will now go it alone.
