The trend was growing, but with the pandemic it took a giant leap: every time we use less cash and more the debit or credit card, even for small amounts. Every time we pay with our card, we are used to the clerk or waiter asks us if we want a copy. And although it may not seem like it, the answer we give is important. The Bank of Spain has warned that we should always ask for a copy, and gives the reasons why we should do so in a publication in an entry published on its official blog. “Before answer negatively, make sure that you have been charged the appropriate amount and that it appears like that on the POS screen”, says the issuing entity in its article. “This is something obvious, it is about looking at what you pay. However, in the Currently, with the widespread use of contactless payments for small amounts, in which it is enough to bring the card close to the POS and they will automatically charge you without having to enter the PIN, you may sometimes act automatically and not even look at what they charge you,” they maintain. “Contactless payments in which the PIN is not requested are currently limited to 50 euros, so if you type a higher amount, they will necessarily ask you for the password and you will have to look at the terminal. In any case, h up to that amount, an error can occur that is always hard to solve”, they continue. In summary, the Bank of Spain recommends that you internalize four pieces of advice: “When you make a contactless payment, when you bring your card to the POS, check the amount that appears on the screen and make sure it is correct. The copy can be used to keep an adequate control of your expenses.” Secondly, “keep the purchase receipt from the store. This way you can verify that the amount of the charge on the card coincides with that of the purchase. Remember that in many businesses there is the possibility of obtaining an electronic ticket”. Thirdly, “review the card charges in your account to keep track of the operations you carry out” and, finally, “ask your entity about the possibility that they send you an SMS message every time a charge is made on your card”.
