Álvaro Martín and Diego García Carrera do it again: gold and bronze in the 20-kilometre walk

Updated Saturday, 20 August 2022 – 10:27Like four years ago, the couple signed a double that elevates Spain in the European ChampionshipÁlvaro Martín (gold), with Karlstroem (silver) and Diego García (bronze).RONALD WITTEKEFEInterview Álvaro Martín: “I am I am privileged and I cannot shut up” Álvaro Martín and Diego García Carrera. Diego Garcia Carrera and Alvaro Martin. Together again, up there, in success. Like four years ago, this Saturday in the 20-kilometer march of the European Championships in Munich they signed a double: Martín repeated gold and García Carrera, then silver, this time he kept the bronze in another ode to the Spanish tradition in the march, those crazy that walk. In recent times both had experienced multiple troubles. Neither the Doha World Cup nor the Tokyo Games nor the Eugene World Cup: nothing turned out the way they wanted. A few weeks ago, in fact, in the United States, Martín ended up lamenting and García Carrera, crying, disconsolate. They were seventh and sixteenth. “I have failed”, summarized García Carrera. Well, both have already recovered. The European is their terrain and this Friday they confirmed it The two and Alberto Amezcua, who finished fourth, controlled the test and only a gifted like the Swedish Perseus Karlstrom, bronze in the World Cup both in the 20 and 35 kilometers, avoided a Spanish triplet . In a group until kilometer 12, Martín and García Carrera responded to Kalstrom’s attacks and a little later they responded at a record pace: Martín, in fact, made the best mark of his life. Like four years ago, the embrace of both in goal was cold, but it was a hug after all: proof that you don’t have to be friends to form one of the most successful couples in Spanish sport. It was just three seconds, a few touches on the back, but there they were, together again up there, in success. Then Martín celebrated by his side, fused with the Munich public, doing selfies for almost half an hour, and García Carrera by his side. But it doesn’t matter. The duo reigned again, which was the important thing. The children who were, those who trained side by side every day, who debuted together at the 2015 World Cup in Beijing, who shared a room at all concentrations, who even planned pranks such as the rare suits bought in the Chinese capital, are already other adults , now they avoid each other when they can, although they still share glory. A few years ago, just before his first double in the 2018 European Championship, Martín left the training group he shared with García Carrera in Madrid, both under the orders of the coach, José Antonio Quintana, and went to train Cieza with another coach, José Antonio Carrillo. The process was traumatic for everyone and threatened their careers until the medals came. His consecration remains in the World Cup or in the Olympic Games, but the Europeans belong to Álvaro Martín and Diego García Carrera, together up there, in success.
