Macron described the war in Ukraine as brutal As AFP reported, Macron made this call just a few hours after a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Bormes-les-Mimosas in the Var department, located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, Macron called the Russian army’s attack on Ukraine brutal and declared that on February 24 it returned to Europe a war raging “only a few hours (travel) from our borders”. Violating the sovereignty of states and “unacceptable contempt for peoples” Putin is summoning “ghosts of revenge” from the past and wants them to become part of the daily life of “Europe, our neighbors, our friends,” Macron declared. Macron, who has long emphasized the importance of dialogue with Putin, is increasingly critical of the Russian president, AFP recalled. In the latest phone call with Putin, Macron urged Russia to accept Ukraine’s terms and allow UN nuclear inspectors to visit Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in the city of Zaporozhye, which has been occupied by Russian troops. The presence of Russian soldiers in the facility and the unclear situation cause great concern for the international community, AFP recalled. Putin and Macron also discussed the shipment of grain and other food commodities from Russia, which are exempt from sanctions imposed on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. As AFP recalled, it was Macron’s 20th phone conversation with Putin this year, but the first in the last three months.
