President Pedro Castillo generates a political crisis in Peru 2:59 (CNN Spanish) — The National Penitentiary Institute of Peru (INPE) announced that it has ordered the release of Antauro Humala Tasso, a former soldier and brother of former President Ollanta Humala Tasso, who He was sentenced by the justice of that country to 19 years in prison for the crimes of simple homicide, kidnapping, aggravated damage, seizure of a firearm and rebellion for the events that occurred in December 2005, when the retired officer of the Peruvian Army led the seizure of the police station in the town of Andahuaylas, in an armed riot that killed four policemen and two ethnocacerists. In a statement released by the INPE Twitter account, it is specified that, although Antauro Humala’s sentence was established by the justice system at 19 years, Humala Tasso’s defense resorted to the figure of redemption of the sentence for work and education. The institute added that after 17 years, 7 months and 14 days of sentence he has served a total of 3,667 days of study and work, which allows him to reduce the sentence by one year and seven months. Humala’s lawyer, Carmen Huidobro, said in a telephone conversation with TV Peru that her client is confined in a module where he has no communication and that the release arranged by INPE could take place this Saturday or Tuesday, since the prison authorities They do not execute this type of order on Sundays or Mondays. Another of the most notorious reactions is that of Vladimir Cerrón, founder of Peru Libre, the party for which President Pedro Castillo ran for president. Cerrón welcomed the decision of the prison authorities stating that the sentence had been unfair. Congressman Carlos Anderson told CNN that the release of Humala Tasso “is a clear sign of the government’s contempt for the life and honor of the policemen who gave their lives for the country.” He added that the government “has no qualms about setting fire to the country in order to save Castillo, all this is part of a political strategy”. Anderson referred to the coincidence that this decision is known on the same day that the Prosecutor’s Office requests 36 months of preventive detention for Pedro Castillo’s sister-in-law, Yenifer Paredes, currently in preliminary detention. For his part, former Interior Minister Carlos Basombrío wrote on Twitter that Castillo “seeks to agitate the streets to divert the discussion of the six criminal cases that are advancing more every day and include his entire family.”
