Vuelta 2022: Jumbo-Visma wins the team time trial, Robert Gesink leader at the end of the 1st stage

The yellow armada won the first stage of the Vuelta by setting the fastest time in the team time trial in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Triple defending champion and leader of his team, Primoz Roglic let his teammate Robert Gesink cut the line in front of him. It is the latter who will wear the first red jersey of the 77th Tour of Spain, at 36 years old. In the distance fight between the favorites for the final victory, the right operation is therefore for Roglic. Ineos Grenadiers, who finished second in the event, put their potential leaders (Richard Carapaz, Tao Geoghegan-Hart, Carlos Rodriguez and Frenchman Pavel Sivakov) at 13 seconds. The Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team completes the podium, which means that Remco Evenepoel is 14 seconds behind the Jumbo-Visma riders. Simon Yates is at 31 seconds, Joao Almeida at 33, Thibaut Pinot at 38 thanks to a very good time for Groupama-FDJ (6th), yet came without assumed ambitions in the general classification. The leaders who suffer the most at the end of this first stage are those of EF Education-Easy Post (Rigoberto Uran, Esteban Chaves and Hugh Carthy), already 1’19” behind the leader.
