With tears, with humility and hope! This is how thousands of believers said goodbye to Cardinal Jozef Tomko († 98) in Košice, at a farewell that has no parallel in the metropolis of the East. 3 cardinals, 35 bishops and many Slovak politicians also came to pay tribute to this modest and kind-hearted person. President Zuzana Čaputová (49) also spoke touching words over the casket. Even the recalled bishop Robert Bezák (62) appeared at the funeral. Cardinal Jozef Tomko chose his final resting place during his lifetime. More than 5,000 people came to say goodbye to him in his native archdiocese of Košice. And it was the main celebrant of the ceremony, Prague Archbishop Dominik Duka, who succinctly captured how the poor cardinal won the hearts of the people. “We are saying goodbye to the great son of Slovakia, the Easterner, Udavčan, who worked hard until the end of his life. That’s how he said goodbye to you on your last pilgrimage to Rome,” he recalled touching moments. This great man made his mark in history not only in the church in Slovakia, but also abroad, including during communism. “He was a support of our church in the former Czechoslovakia, as evidenced by the materials of the State Security and Czechoslovak intelligence services. Their records serve to honor a man who did not betray and defame his chest, as the poet says,” said Duka during a sermon delivered in Slovak, at the end of which he received applause.
