And the start of the new school year in September does not look very promising. According to the 20th annual report of the Federation of General Student Associations (FAGE) published on Tuesday August 16, this start of the 2022 school year is marked by a “historic and “unprecedented” by 7.38% for a 20-year-old university student, bringing its average cost to 2,527 euros (as a reminder, in 2021 this amount was 2,392.47 euros). This with approximately half devoted to the costs of re-entry (1,307.20 euros) and the other to the costs of everyday life (1,219.82 euros). “This is a historic increase, in twenty years that we have made this indicator of the cost of the start of the school year, we have never had such an increase of 7.38%, it is really unheard of,” said Paul Mayaux, president of FAGE at HuffPost. Inflation at 6.1% not seen for several years This change is explained in particular by an increase in the amount of re-entry fees. Thus, compared to last year, we note for example an increase of 32.21% in the costs of complementary health, the same for the costs related to teaching materials (15.82%), for the costs of housing insurance ( 11.83%) and the CVEC (Life and Campus Contribution) (3.26%). In addition, consumption costs increase by more than 6% because of inflation, notes the FAGE which specifies that “this considerable increase must be borne throughout the year by the students”. “It’s been a good bunch of years since we’ve seen such strong inflation,” underlines Paul Mayaux. Regarding the aid provided to students, such as the extension of the university restaurant ticket (RU) to €1 for scholarship students or identified in a precarious situation, the revaluation of scholarships on social criteria by 4% or the revaluation of APL by 3, 5%, the FAGE considers that they are not enough. “They only concern part of the student population and once again marginalize a large part of those who need it. These aids are palliative aids, and do not come to provide a lasting solution in the face of growing student precariousness, ”we can read in their press release. However, despite the end of the health crisis, “students are still in difficulty”, warns Paul Mayaux, who specifies that more and more students are going to AGORAé social grocery stores and that many of them find themselves without accommodation before the comeback.
