HN finding: The sale of US Steel in Košice is in a deadlock. The problem should be the low offers of applicants – HNonline.sk

It has been more than two decades since Východoslovak železierna was renamed US Steel. Although the owner changed then, the position of a key employer in eastern Slovakia and one of the largest in the entire country remained. The possible sale of the factory has been discussed several times, most recently five years ago. Even though it was sold at the time, this strategic company is currently on offer again. This was confirmed for HN by well-informed sources from eastern Slovakia. Although US Steel does not comment on this, it does not deny the fact that it is interested in new partners. “We believe that partnerships are crucial to achieving our ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. That’s why we continue the search,” states Steelka’s spokesperson Ján Bača, adding that it is currently premature to talk about any names. However, according to HN’s findings, the closest to them are oil producers from the Hungarian MOL Group and the Czech group Sev.en Energy, which is owned by the eighth richest Czech, Pavel Tykač. Both of them have been intensely interested in the purchase of the smelter for months. Despite this, however, there was still no final verdict, and the negotiations were at a dead end for a while.
